Seoul Outlet Malls: Which Ones Are Worth the Trip from Seoul

Dongtan is the quicker, easier trip by train, while Paju suits travelers who want a big open-air outlet and are fine with a bus ride. Both offer tax refunds at participating stores.

Why Visit an Outlet Mall Near Seoul

Seoul has plenty of central shopping, so an outlet trip is only worth it if you plan to buy things in volume: clothing, shoes, bags, sportswear or home goods. Outlet malls sit outside the city, which means a half-day or full-day commitment. In return you get a wider spread of international and domestic brands in one place, and a pace that is slower than Myeongdong or the department store districts.

This guide compares the two outlets most visitors consider: Paju Premium Outlets, northwest of Seoul, and Lotte Premium Outlets Dongtan, south of the city. The comparison uses travel time, access, hours and tax refund handling. If you would rather stay in town, our Myeongdong shopping guide covers malls, streets and refunds in central Seoul, and the Starfield COEX Mall guide covers a large indoor option in Gangnam.

One note on naming: the Dongtan site is listed by Lotte as an outlets and department store complex, so check the official page for which sections are open and which brands are inside before you go.

Paju Premium Outlets: Getting There and What to Buy

Paju is the better-known option for visitors staying on the western side of Seoul, since the direct bus leaves from the Hapjeong and Hongik University area.

Bus
No. 2200 from Hapjeong Station (Line 2 / Line 6, Exit 1 or 2) or Hongik University Station (as of October 2026, premiumoutlets.co.kr)
Travel time
About 1 hour from Hapjeong; about 1 hour 15 minutes from Hongik University Station (as of October 2026, premiumoutlets.co.kr)
Bus fare
Not confirmed in the venue's current transport page; check the official site or pay on board and keep a transit card handy
Hours
Monday to Thursday 10:30 to 20:30; Friday to Sunday 10:30 to 21:00 (as of October 2026, premiumoutlets.co.kr)
Closed
Seollal and Chuseok (as of October 2026, english.visitkorea.or.kr)

The format is an open-air outlet village, so you walk between stores outdoors. That means comfortable shoes and a layer for weather. It suits shoppers who like to browse several brand shops systematically. Check the official Paju map and the facilities page to see the current brand list, tax refund services and other amenities before you commit to the trip.

Weekday mornings are usually calmer than weekends at any outlet. Because Paju closes later on Friday to Sunday, a weekend visit gives you extra evening time, but the buses back toward Seoul can also be busier.

Lotte Premium Outlets Dongtan: Getting There and What to Buy

Dongtan is the faster option if you are near the southeast of Seoul or can reach Suseo Station. The key advantage is the train link, which avoids road traffic.

Train
Suseo Station to Dongtan Station via SRT or GTX-A (as of October 2026, minfo.lotteshopping.com)
Travel time
About 20 minutes on the express train from Suseo to Dongtan (as of October 2026, minfo.lotteshopping.com)
Walking link
Underground passage from Basement Level 4 of Dongtan Station to Basement Level 2 of Lotte Dongtan (as of October 2026, minfo.lotteshopping.com)
Bus
Express buses such as M4130 or M4434 run from central Seoul to the Dongtan Station / Lotte Castle stop (as of October 2026, minfo.lotteshopping.com)
Hours
Standard 10:30 to 20:00; weekends and holidays may run to 20:30 or 21:00; some select holiday dates have shortened hours of 10:30 to 15:00, so check the official store calendar for specific dates (minfo.lotteshopping.com)
Closed

Because it connects directly to the station, you can reach the stores without walking outside, which helps in summer heat or winter cold. The complex also includes department store sections, so it works for mixed shopping and a meal. See the Lotte Shopping store page for current floors, brands and notices.

Check the monthly closing day before you go. Lotte stores close on designated days, and the date changes by month, so a quick look at the official calendar prevents a wasted trip.

How the Two Compare on Time, Brands, and Price

Neither source gives a confirmed bus fare for Paju, and the research does not list train ticket prices for Dongtan, so costs below are described rather than quoted. Check the official sites or your transit app for current fares.

Which to choose

  • First-time visitors with a tight schedule: Dongtan. The train is quick and the station link is simple.
  • Staying near Hongdae, Hapjeong or Mangwon: Paju. The direct bus starts close to you.
  • Travelers with kids or older relatives: Dongtan, because the indoor connection means less walking outside.
  • Shoppers who want a full day of browsing: Paju, where the outlet-village layout rewards time.
  • Travelers heading to Suwon too: Dongtan is in the same southern direction; see our Suwon Hwaseong Fortress day trip guide to judge whether both fit in a day.

Brand mix changes, so rely on each venue's current directory rather than a fixed list. Both sell a blend of international and Korean labels.

Tax Refunds and Payment Tips for US Shoppers

Tax refunds apply at both types of venue as long as the store is certified. Look for "Tax Refund" or "Tax Free" signage at the shop.

  • Minimum spend: KRW 15,000 on a single receipt (as of October 2026, english.visitkorea.or.kr).
  • Immediate refund: With your physical passport, VAT can be deducted at checkout for purchases up to KRW 1,000,000 per item purchase, up to KRW 5,000,000 total per trip (as of October 2026, korea.net).
  • Other refunds: Claim at downtown refund kiosks or booths, or at airport and port customs counters and automated kiosks before departure (as of October 2026, english.visitkorea.or.kr).
  • Payout: Cash in KRW, or credit to a card or mobile payment platform at counters and kiosks, or a price deduction at checkout (as of October 2026, english.visitkorea.or.kr).

Bring your physical passport, not a photo. Immediate refunds require it at the register. Keep receipts together, and check the official VisitKorea refund information for departure-day procedures.

On entry rules, US passport holders are exempt from needing a K-ETA through December 31, 2026 (as of October 2026, k-eta.go.kr). Applying voluntarily costs 10,000 KRW plus a 3% online payment fee, and must be done at least 72 hours before departure (as of October 2026, k-eta.go.kr). Check the official K-ETA page if your travel dates extend beyond that exemption date.

Tipping, Power Plugs, and Other Practical Notes

Tipping is generally not expected or customary when shopping or dining in Korea. Staff at outlet stores and food courts do not expect it.

Korea uses 220V at 60Hz with Type C and Type F round two-pin outlets (english.visitkorea.or.kr). US devices with dual-voltage chargers need only a plug adapter, but check the label on hair tools and other single-voltage items.

For navigation and ticket lookups on the way, mobile data helps. Our eSIM guide compares options. If you plan to return by taxi, read the Kakao Taxi vs Uber comparison, though outlet-to-Seoul rides are far longer than city trips, so compare the bus or train first.

Planning Your Outlet Day Trip

  1. Pick the outlet by where you stay: Hapjeong or Hongdae for Paju; Suseo or the southeast for Dongtan.
  2. Check the official hours and closing days for your date, including Seollal and Chuseok for Paju and the monthly calendar for Dongtan.
  3. Shop the brand directory online and make a short list of stores.
  4. Carry your physical passport for immediate tax refunds.
  5. Leave in the morning, take lunch on site, and head back before the evening rush.

Overall, Dongtan is the easier choice for most visitors because of the train and indoor access, while Paju is a good fit if you are based in western Seoul and want a longer outdoor browse. Confirm fares and hours on the official sites shortly before you go, since both can change.
